In the 1980s the Portstewart Golf Club attempted to expand it's course along the River Bann on an area of mostly intact dunes. The construction of to new holes started surreptitiously and threatened to annihilate a population of protected bee orchids. The golf club, the National Trust with the blessing of the local Conservation came to some informal agreement that the rare species should be translocated, a move opposed by university researchers (see newspaper report below pdf).  After a long saga the work on the extension was not allowed to proceed.
