The famous 'Avenue des baobabs' in western Madagascar illustrates the various conservation issues facing the country. These include threatened endemic species (Adansonia grandidieri), invasive plants (scrubby Ziziphus jujuba), deforestation, land conversion to agriculture (brown zone in background above is a large circular sugarcane field), drying up of semi-permanent pools and fire (bottom right corner on aerial photo).

The above photo was taken ca 10 m above ground from the large baobab located in the left bottom corner of the aerial view. Photos taken in November 2007.
