The famous 'Avenue des
baobabs' in western Madagascar illustrates the various conservation
issues facing the country. These include threatened endemic species (Adansonia grandidieri), invasive
plants (scrubby Ziziphus jujuba),
deforestation, land conversion to agriculture (brown zone in background
above is a large circular sugarcane field), drying up of semi-permanent
pools and fire (bottom right corner on aerial photo).
